PC injection molding
What is PC (Polycarbonate)?
Polycarbonate (PC) is a transparent, engineering-grade thermoplastic known for its extreme impact resistance and high dimensional stability. The material is up to 250 times stronger than glass and is widely used for housings, protective covers, lenses, transparent components and other technical products. Thanks to its clarity, strength and precision, PC is suitable for applications in the technical sector, electronics, automotive and security.
Injection molding with polycarbonate plastic
Why choose PC injection molding?
1. Exceptionally impact-resistant and strong
PC has one of the highest impact resistance values of all plastics. This makes polycarbonate particularly suitable for components that must withstand heavy impact, such as protective covers, housings, machine parts and safety components.
2. Glass-like transparency, but much stronger
Polycarbonate is clear and optically pure, which is why it is often used for lenses, light covers, displays and design products. While a machined polycarbonate sheet remains flat, injection molding enables complex three-dimensional shapes.
3. Excellent dimensional stability and temperature resistance
PC retains its shape and strength under high temperatures and mechanical loads. This makes it ideal for precise technical components and products that are subjected to long-term stress.
4. Broad applicability in demanding sectors
Polycarbonate is widely used in electronics, automotive, lighting, medical equipment, machine construction and security products. The balance between transparency, strength and dimensional stability makes PC a premium injection molding material.
5. Good electrical insulation and stability
PC is electrically insulating and dimensionally stable (retains its shape and shows minimal warping, shrinkage or expansion), making it suitable for products that require both mechanical and electrical safety.
6. Easily recyclable
Polycarbonate can be recycled, although transparency is lost in the process. Recycled PC is therefore mainly used for colored or less visible components.
The properties of polycarbonate
The advantages of PC plastic
This material combines exceptional mechanical and optical properties, making it both strong and versatile. It retains its shape, transparency and strength under various conditions, making it ideal for both technical and visible applications.
Key material properties:
- Extremely impact-resistant: up to 250x stronger than glass
- Transparent and optically pure: ideal for visible parts and lighting technology
- Heat-resistant: retains strength and stiffness at elevated temperatures
- Good dimensional stability: minimal deformation under load
- Electrically insulating: widely used in equipment, housings and connectors
Disadvantages of PC
- Scratches more easily than glass or harder plastics (coating may be required)
- Limited chemical resistance; sensitive to aggressive solvents
- Higher material costs than standard plastics such as PP or PE

Costs and
lead times of PC injection molding
The costs of PC injection molding are influenced by the design, production volume and the specific type of polycarbonate. PC is a premium engineering plastic, which results in higher material costs compared to standard plastics. In addition, transparent or optically high-quality products place extra demands on the mold design and process settings.
Factors influencing the price:
- Type of PC: standard, UV-stabilized, heat-resistant or flame-retardant polycarbonate have different price ranges
- Color and clarity: transparent PC, optical-grade quality or special tints increase costs
- Material usage: impact-resistant or thick-walled components require more raw material
- Properties & additives: UV stabilizers, anti-scratch coatings or optical compounds increase cost
Average delivery times:
- Standard PC: usually available from stock or within 1–2 weeks
- Special PC grades or optical compounds: 2–6 weeks depending on supplier and formulation

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about PC injection molding
Polycarbonate (PC) is a strong, impact-resistant plastic. It is clear and transparent, almost like glass, but much stronger and less brittle. PC is usually processed by injection molding or extrusion and can be formed into complex shapes. Compared to glass or PMMA, PC is lighter, more impact-resistant, better able to withstand temperature fluctuations and retains its dimensional stability.
Polycarbonate is used for products where strength and transparency are essential. Example applications include:
- Lighting and light covers
- Housings for electronics or machinery
- Protective parts and safety components
- Lenses and displays
